Question by Steve Z: Why would a captain of a fishing boat no longer be a captain?
I am researching a plot for a movie. It is about a fishing community. I need someone who was once a fishing boat captain, but is no longer. Can anyone come up with a "back story" (plausible) as to why he no longer captains a boat?

Crashed his boat - can't afford a new one.
Financial problems caused him to sell his boat.

lost his wife/family in a boating accident..or his father, of his best buddy

Hmmm maybe he had a wife/lover that was on a ship with him, they ran into a terrible storm and he lost her overboard and wasnt able to save her. So he cannot bear the thought of ever sailing again without his Woman…
