A small boat that is equipped and primarily designed for bass fishing and is usually used in fresh water catchments like lakes, streams and also rivers. They are not designed to accommodate many people because they are small. They cannot accommodate more than four people on them so as to leave some space for the fish on board. There are some that feature swivel seats that enable the angler to cast either a net and storage bins in any position he/she may choose around the boat. These bass boats can be operated using two means, it can be operated by either using a trolling motor which can move the bass boat at a slow pace through the area the angler is fishing and an outboard motor which can move the bass boat swiftly from one place to another. If the motors happen to fail while one is still fishing in the water, there is no need to worry because these boats are small and can be easily propelled by oars.

Most of the bass boats are usually built and constructed by using either fiberglass or aluminum. The bass boats are usually constructed using these two types of materials because these materials are light, cheap and can be acquired easily. Bass boats made from both materials are very cheap but the ones made from aluminum are lighter and much cheaper than the ones made from fiberglass. However, the boats made from fiberglass have more space, offer better handling and have the ability to house large outboard motors.

The term "Bass boat" was used in the old days to refer to a certain type of sport fishing boat that was popular for fishing off the United States Atlantic coast. These kind of base boats were between 20-25 feet long and had a hull form which is similar to the New England lobster boat which has rounded bilges, a little dead-rise at the stern and a sharp entry. These types of bass boats were powered by inboard engines which had a top speed of almost 20 knots. The deck configuration had a long cockpit which had a windshield and a small cabin in the bow. Some of that kind of bass boats that are still being produced include the Dyer 29 and the For tier 26 boats.

The bass boats have undergone evolution over the years from the narrow flat bottom boats that had raised seats to the high performance machines that are available in the market today. One can use almost any type of boat for bass fishing although some boats suit some situations better than others. In general, fiberglass V-hulls OR semi V-hulls, flat bottomed row boats, Canoes and aluminum V-hulls are the types of boats that are commonly used for bass fishing in the United States Of America. It is advisable to stay close to the shores of a fishing site while using bass boats so as to stay safe while fishing.
